High Density Storage With Narrow Aisle Pallet Racking

Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) pallet racking is an improved version of the standard pallet racking system. Narrow aisle racking is designed for high density storage in very narrow spaces.

The system reduces the width of the working aisle (as small as 1.5 meters). Ideal for homogeneous stocks with a special narrow forklift system.

Unlike drive-in racking, VNA Racking offers 100% selectivity with the FIFO inventory manager system. Each pallet can be accessed individually, making it a better solution for operations with frequent access requirements.

At HEDA SHELVES, we’re committed to customizing Compact pallet racking to optimize your warehouse management efficiency.

Narrow Aisle Pallet Racking

Narrow Aisle Pallet Racking is a type of storage equipment used for storing long, large, or irregularly shaped items. It’s typically used for storing items such as pipes, lumber, metal sheets, construction materials, and other long items, and they facilitate easy loading and unloading.

  • Easy Access: With no front columns, cantilever racks provide open storage space, making it convenient to access items and allowing for flexible handling.
  • Wide Applicability: cantilever racks can also be used for storing items such as sheets, pipes, tires, and more.
  • Flexibility: Cantilever racks can be customized according to storage requirements, with adjustable arm lengths and heights to accommodate items of different sizes and weights.

  • All Pallets Accessible
  • Good Space Utilization
  • High Throughput Speeds
  • Aisle Width: 1.6m – 2.3m
  • FIFO Principle (First In, First Out)
  • Good Stock Rotation Capabilities
  • Specialist Forklift Trucks Required
  • 100% Accessibility to every pallet stored
  • Maximize usable floor area and roof height
  • Reduce standard aisle widths by up to 50%
  • Damage rate reduction as narrow aisle trucks are often guided by wire or rail

By allowing Special aisle forklift trucks to operate in aisles up to half the width required in conventional pallet racking, VNA racking systems ensure that more floor space can be used for racking and storage.

Narrow Aisle racks can maximize the height at which goods can be stacked.

This combination of full height and tightly placed rows makes excellent use of the available floor space within a facility.

Narrow aisle racking works well on a good quality smooth warehouse floor that can withstand heavy traffic.

Higher Initial Cost

The initial cost of installing a narrow aisle racking system is significantly higher than a traditional racking system due to the need for specialized handling equipment. However, the increased storage density and efficiency provided by narrow aisle racking can offset the initial investment over time.

Specialist Equipment Required for Handling

Narrow aisle racking necessitates the use of specialized equipment such as turret trucks and drum transporters, which can be expensive to purchase and maintain. Additionally, workers require extensive training to safely operate these specialized machines within the confined spaces of a narrow aisle racking system.

Potential for Increased Damage to Pallets and Racks

The tight tolerances and limited maneuvering space in a narrow aisle pallet racking system increase the risk of damage to both pallets and racks during storage and retrieval operations. Careful handling practices and operator training are crucial to minimize the potential for damage.

Limited Maneuverability and Accessibility

While narrow aisle racking maximizes storage density, it can significantly restrict the maneuverability and accessibility of workers and equipment within the warehouse. The limited aisle width can make it challenging to move large or bulky items in and out of storage, potentially impacting overall productivity.

Reduced Ventilation and Lighting

In very narrow aisle racking systems, the close proximity of the racking and the potential for increased storage heights can lead to reduced ventilation and lighting within the warehouse. This can create an uncomfortable working environment for employees and may require additional lighting and ventilation solutions.

High-Density Storage: VNA racking is designed to maximize storage capacity by allowing aisles as narrow as 5 to 6 feet. This enables facilities to increase their storage density by up to 50% or more compared to traditional racking systems, making it ideal for warehouses with limited floor space.
Automated Warehousing: VNA systems can be easily integrated with automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS), including trilateral stacker cranes. This automation enhances efficiency and reduces labor costs, making it suitable for operations that prioritize speed and accuracy in inventory management.
FIFO Inventory Management: VNA racking supports First-In, First-Out (FIFO) systems, which are essential for businesses dealing with perishable goods or items with expiration dates. This ensures that older stock is accessed before newer stock, maintaining product freshness.
Retail and Distribution Centers: Retailers and distribution centers that manage a high volume of SKUs benefit from VNA racking as it allows for quick access to a wide variety of products without sacrificing space. The system supports high SKU counts while maintaining direct access to all items.
Manufacturing Facilities: In manufacturing, VNA racking can be used to store raw materials, components, and finished goods efficiently. The ability to utilize vertical space is particularly beneficial in facilities with high ceilings, allowing for more organized inventory management.
Cold Storage: VNA racking is also applicable in cold storage environments where maximizing space is critical. The narrow aisles can help maintain temperature control while optimizing storage for frozen or refrigerated goods

Aisle Width
Standard Aisle Width: VNA racking typically features aisle widths ranging from 1.5 to 1.6 meters (approximately 5 to 5.25 feet) .

Maximum Aisle Width: In some configurations, aisles can be as wide as 2.0 meters (about 6.5 feet), depending on the specific requirements and the equipment used .

Height and Depth
Height: VNA racking systems can be designed to reach heights of 40 to 50 feet, allowing for significant vertical storage capacity .

Depth of Racking: The depth of the racking itself varies based on the pallets being stored, but it is generally designed to accommodate standard pallet sizes.

Equipment Requirements Forklift Specifications:

VNA systems require specialized forklifts, such as turret trucks or articulated trucks, which can operate effectively within the narrow aisles. These trucks typically do not require turning space, as they are designed to move in a vertical motion .
